Our Training Courses

The Club provides training courses for children and adults alike. During the months of July and August we provide weekly courses for complete beginners right up to seamanship. In addition we can provide training up to instructor level throughout the year.

Youth Sailing Courses

CLYC runs the RYA Youth Sailing Programme. The programme consists of four stages, each stage builds upon knowledge and ability to produce an individual that will be able to sail a dinghy by themselves confidently in moderate conditions.

These week long courses are run throughout the summer period for children aged 7-18, by qualified RYA Instructors. The course runs from Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 16:30 each day.

To ensure you child is safe and comfortable on the course, we recommend you ensure that they have the advised clothing. This includes, wetsuit, wetsuit boots/trainers (they will get wet!), waterproof jacket and a buoyancy aid. We can provide these during each course.

Please note, children’s ability will be assessed by the Senior Instructor during the course, progression to the next stage of the programme will be given once they are happy with the competence and ability of the sailor. Due to this, it is important to recognise that this means it can take more than one week before progressing.

Adult Sailing Courses

CLYC runs the RYA National Sailing Scheme to teach adults, aged 19 and over, how to sail. The Sailing Scheme is formed of three core parts:

  • Level 1 – Start Sailing
  • Level 2 – Basic Skills
  • Level 3 – Better Sailing
  • Level 4 – Seamanship

Once these courses have been taken you can take advanced modules such as Sailing with Spinnakers and Day Sailing.
All National Sailing Scheme courses are taken over a period of 18 hours, by qualified RYA Instructors. The elements of  the National Sailing Scheme are:

Level 1 – Start Sailing

The course provides a short introduction to sailing for novices. By the end of the course you will have the basic understanding of dinghy-handling techniques and background knowledge.

Level 2 – Basic Skills

This course builds upon the practical skills and theoretical knowledge taught in the Start Sailing qualification. On completion of this course, you will have a basic knowledge of sailing and be capable of sailing without an instructor on board in light winds.

Level 3 – Better Sailing

On completion of this course the successful sailor will be safety conscious and capable of sailing without an instructor on board in light to moderate conditions. This improver course seeks to bridge the gap between the Basic Skills qualification and the five advanced modules offered in the National Sailing Scheme by offering an introduction to each of the different modules.

Level 4 – Seamanship

Improve your boat handling and manouevering ability in a range of different circumstances and develop the seamanship skills needed to solve problems afloat. Launching and recovering the boat in different circumstances. Stopping, reducing sail, recovering a man overboard, picking up a mooring and anchoring.
